Women’s Swimming & Diving Wraps Challenging Road Trip

Colonials faced Penn State and Pitt on consecutive days
PITTSBURGH – George Washington women's swimming and diving faced off against Power Five foes on back-to-back days to open its dual meet season.
The Colonials traveled to Penn State on Friday at McCoy Natatorium before facing another tough test against Pittsburgh on Saturday at Trees Pool.
PITT HIGHLIGHTS
- Jackie Torrez led the Colonials with a pair of second-place finishes. The junior from California was runner-up in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.46) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.23). She also teamed with Andrea Ho, Isabela Patino and Rebecca Smolcic on GW's 200-yard medley relay team that placed second in 1:46.48.
- A pair of first-years headed the Colonials in the 50-yard freestyle with Smolcic in second in 24.53 seconds followed by Grace Olivardia (24.69) in third. Patino, another first-year, was third in the 100-yard freestyle (53.21).
- Meghan Burton took second in the 100-yard butterfly (58.97). The sophomore transfer took fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (59.43), just behind teammate Ho (59.34).
- Gemma Atherley was runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke for the second straight day in 2:04.80.
- Gabriella Arendes led GW on the 1-meter diving board (226.50) with Rachel Dickinson pacing the Buff and Blue in the 3-meter competition (205.28).
PENN STATE HIGHLIGHTS
- GW put together a pair of strong swims in the 200 breast with Torrez taking second (2:24.30) and Courtney Sicinski third (2:25.91) behind U.S. National Team member Ally McHugh. Torrez also paced the Colonials in the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.85), while Sicinski led the Buff and Blue in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.00).
- Atherley grabbed second in the 200 back in 2:04.33.
- Reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Andrea Moussier earned a pair of third-place finishes. The first-year from Mexico finished the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:24.51 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:07.64.
- Smolcic was third in the 50 free (24.45) and fourth in the 100 free (53.57). The first-year from New Zealand also was part of an impressive effort in the 400 free relay (3:41.57) with Atherley, Emily Zhang and Patino.
- Arendes was GW's top diver on both boards against the Nittany Lions.
UP NEXT: GW has a three-week break from competition before welcoming Howard to Charles E. Smith Center Pool on Nov. 10 to continue its fall schedule.
