Junior won 200 free on opening day of TYR Fall Classic
NORTH MIAMI, Fla. - Gemma Atherley's win in the 200-yard freestyle highlighted George Washington's opening day at Florida International's TYR Fall Classic presented by Swiss Timing.
Atherley touched in 1:52.25 in her victory Friday to lead the Colonials, who sit fifth with 187.5 points after the first of two days at Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center. Florida Gulf Coast (244.5) has the lead headed into Saturday's competition.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Atherley also swam a leg on GW's 200-yard freestyle relay that finished tied for fourth in 1:37.59, teaming with Rebecca Smolcic, Grace Olivardia and Meghan Burton.
- Emily Zhang posted a third-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:29.91. The senior from Maryland also placed seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.07).
- Burton's GW debut was highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (57.69). Smolcic, a first-year from New Zealand, placed seventh in the 50-yard freestyle (24.76) to begin her first collegiate meet.
- Gabriella Arendes led GW's divers with a seventh-place finish on the 1-meter board (176.60).
