Colonials unveiled their 2017 championship banners before Navy victory
WASHINGTON – After unveiling its 2017 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Championship and NCAA Tournament banners, George Washington men's water polo took care of business in its home pool with a 14-8 win over Navy on Friday night.
Atakan Destici, Andrew Mavis and Andras Levai netted three goals apiece to power the 20th-ranked Colonials past the Midshipmen in an MAWPC contest at a packed Smith Center Pool.
GW (16-5, 6-2 MAWPC) seized control early and dropped Navy (12-9, 4-3) for its third straight victory. The Colonials built a 4-1 advantage in the opening minutes and never relinquished the lead.
After the Midshipmen edged within 6-3 midway through the second quarter, the Colonials posted four of the next five goals to close the half. Levai's score with 1:02 left before the break extended the lead to 10-4.
GW kept the pressure on after halftime, extending the lead to 13-5 on Levai's final tally with 5:11 left in the third quarter. That was plenty for the Buff and Blue to improve to 5-0 in Foggy Bottom this season.
Destici stoked the GW offense, distributing five assists in addition to his three goals. Seniors Jack Kerwin and Zach Slaughter each found the net twice with first-year Nick Schroeder scoring the other goal.
Austin Pyrch and Matt Taylor combined for 20 saves in net, limiting Navy to a pair of goals in each quarter. Levai and Destici both recorded two steals and a field block in the victory.
UP NEXT: After a break next weekend, GW is back at Smith Center Pool on Nov. 4 with an MAWPC doubleheader. The Colonials are set to face Fordham at 10 a.m. before meeting No. 20 Wagner at 3 p.m.
BANNER DAY: Watch 2017 captain Pierce Deamer unveil the banners in a pregame ceremony.
