STONY BROOK, N.Y. - George Washington men's soccer concluded its nonconference schedule Tuesday night, battling Stony Brook to a 1-1 draw at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
Oscar Haynes Brown staked the Colonials (3-4-2) to an early lead, netting a 10th-minute header for his team-high fourth goal of the season. They stayed on top of Stony Brook (5-2-2) until Vince Erdei's penalty kick goal in the 82nd minute.
The score remained tied through the rest of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime. GW's best chance in extra time came when Christian Lawal forced Stony Brook keeper Jacob Braham to punch away a long-distance shot in the 112th minute.
The Colonials held serve defensively with keeper Thor Arne Höfs making three of his eight saves after the Seawolves tied it.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 10th Minute --Haynes Brown's header put the Colonials in front. Peirce Williams curled a free kick from about 35 yards out toward the left post where Haynes Brown was waiting to direct it past Stony Brook keeper Jacob Braham. (GW 1, Stony Brook 0)
- 82nd Minute -- Stony Brook tied it on Erdei's penalty kick. The forward created the opportunity when he was taken down in the box and then converted it with a low shot into the left side of the net. (GW 1, Stony Brook 1)
NOTEWORTHY:
- Haynes Brown's four goals lead GW and are tied for most among A-10 freshmen with Dayton's Thor Helgason. The forward has nine points through his first seven appearances.
- It was the first career point for Williams, a freshman who logged 67 minutes in his fourth career start.
- Stony Brook outshot GW, 18-11, for the game. Both teams put nine attempts on frame. Haynes Brown registered three of them to lead the Colonials.
- Erdei's penalty kick was the first allowed by GW this season.
