GW (3-5-2, 0-1 A-10) was down 2-0 in its Atlantic 10 opener before Haynes Brown got one back in the 82nd minute with a score set up by Drini Redzepi and Christian Lawal. The Colonials managed two more shots after that but were unable to find the equalizer.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Rhode Island (5-2-2, 1-0) netted its goals 10 minutes apart early in the second half. Dominik Richter and Chae Brangman scored for the Rams, who had to play the final three-plus minutes down a man after an 87th-minute red card.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 50th Minute -- Rhode Island broke the deadlock out of the halftime intermission. Richter slipped free, running on to a pass from Ludvik Benco. The midfielder/forward reserve's shot found the net inside the right post for his first goal of the season. (Rhode Island 1, GW 0)
- 60th Minute --Brangman added to the lead with his fifth goal of the season, assisted by Liam Daley and Peder Kristiansen. (Rhode Island 2, GW 0)
- 82nd Minute -- Haynes Brown halved the deficit with his latest timely finish. Lawal capped a long run down the sideline with a cross to Redzepi, who found Haynes Brown in front for the close-range shot inside the right post. (Rhode Island 2, GW 1)
NOTEWORTHY:
- Haynes Brown has scored in five of the eight games he's played in his freshman season, including two in a row.
- All three of Lawal's assists this fall have come on goals by Haynes Brown. It was Redzepi's second helper of the season, and the other one also set up Haynes Brown.
- Haynes Brown's goal came on GW's only shot on net of the second half. The Colonials put five of their 10 attempts on target for the game. Both tries in the final five minutes went wide.
- Rhode Island managed to put nine of its 13 total shots on goal.
- GW keeper Thor Arne Höfs made seven saves, while Rhode Island's Nils Leifhelm was credited with four stops, all in the opening half.
UP NEXT: The Colonials return home Wednesday to renew their Revolutionary Rivalry with George Mason. It's a 2 p.m. start at GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
