WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The George Washington men's rowing team concluded its regular-season schedule by winning three races against Navy, Hobart and Columbia on Sunday afternoon on Mercer Lake.
Conditions featured a 9-to-11 mile-per-hour headwind that increased throughout the day.
"We had an okay day of racing," said head coach Mark Davis. "There was a strong quartering headwind with some rain today and some of our boats raced a little better than the others."
GW earned wins the the 3rd Varsity 8, Freshmen 8 and 5th Varsity 4 while finishing third overall in the Varsity 8 and fourth in the 2nd Varsity 8.
In Varsity 8 action, GW finished third overall in 6:08.90, just four seconds behind Columbia (6:04.80) and three seconds behind Navy (6:05.80). Hobart took fourth in 6:14.00.
"The V8 had a decent row but it was not their best," said Davis. "They were ahead of Navy early but Columbia had a great start and rowed a strong race. We were up early on Navy and then fell back a bit and weren't able to hold the pace but finished three seconds behind Navy and four behind Columbia."
The 3V8 secured a 10-second victory over the field with a time of 6:19.50, ahead of Navy (6:29.90), Columbia (6:38.00) and Hobart (6:46.70).
The Colonials' 4V8 finished in second place in 6:23.00, just a few seats behind first-place Navy (6:20.80). GW defeated Navy's 4V8 (6:35.30) and Hobart (6:54.00).
GW concluded the day with wins by both the Freshman 8 (6:28.30) and 5th Varsity 4 (7:14.70).
"Overall it was a decent day and now its time to gear up for final exams and Eastern Sprints, which is coming up in two weeks time," said Davis. "Now we get back to work and get faster."
