WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's rowing team won two out of three races on Saturday morning to finish in second place overall out of six competing teams in the Oliver T. Carr Bowl standings on the final day of the George Washington Invitational on the Potomac River.
Saturday's schedule was compressed and accelerated in anticipation of inclement weather and poor racing conditions forecasted for mid-morning and the remainder of the afternoon.
Conditions in the early morning on the Potomac featured calm water with a slight tail current with light and variable winds.
The racing format switched to three boats per race as opposed to the normal dual-race format.
The Varsity 8 was in action first and was narrowly edged out by Drexel by a margin of 1.4 seconds at the finish line. Drexel won in 5:38.10 while the Colonials (5:39.50) finished ahead of third-place Virginia (5:51.60). The second-place finish earned the Colonials 10 points in the Carr Bowl standings.
The 2nd Varsity 8 was next on the course and picked up a win and 12 points in the standings after defeating Virginia and Drexel. GW finished in 5:53.80 with Virginia (6:00.90) and Drexel (6:01.40) following.
