PRINCETON, N.J. - The George Washington men's rowing team swept all five races it competed in during a dominant performance against Georgetown, Rutgers and Williams on Saturday afternoon on Lake Carnegie.
"We won all of the events today with a good day of racing across the board. All of our crews did very well," said Head Coach Mark Davis.
Conditions on Lake Carnegie featured a 13 miles-per-hour headwind, with slight gusts and chop.
GW's Varsity 8 won the George's Cup by topping Georgetown and the field with a time of 6:08.50.
"The Varsity 8 lost this event by one second last year and they wanted to have a better showing and they went out and did that with best race of the season so far," said Coach Davis. "It was a very close race in first 500 meters and we established a very good rhythm and were able to pull away and win by ten seconds. The guys were happy with that performance but know they have a lot more to work on to get even faster."
GW's 2nd Varsity 8 jumped out to an early lead and withstood a furious rally by Georgetown in the final 500 meters to win in 6:25.90.
"The 2V8 raced very well for first three quarters and to Georgetown's credit they came storming back and closed to just over a one-second margin," said Coach Davis. "But, we were just able to hold them off. We need to do a better job of maintaining our reads in the last 500 meters."
Both the 3rd Varsity 8 (6:24.90) and 4th Varsity 8 (6:30.30) won their respective races by open water. The Colonials also raced a Freshman 8 that was victorious over Georgetown by a 12-second margin in 6:30.30.
GW returns to action against Navy and Columbia on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, New Jersey, on May 1.
