GW Men's Rowing Sweeps Three Races on Friday

WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's rowing team swept three races against Holy Cross to total 39 points in the Oliver T. Carr Bowl standings on the first day of the George Washington Invitational on Friday afternoon on the Potomac River.
Due to anticipated inclement weather on Saturday, the day-two schedule has been altered in order to safely get races in ahead of dangerous wind conditions. Racing will now be in one block from 7-9 a.m. For a detailed schedule ="">click here.
Conditions on Friday were rough with a 15-20 m.p.h. variable wind that gusted to 30 m.p.h. Whitecaps were also present throughout the race course.
The first race of the day was the 3rd Varsity 8 contest where the Colonials saw a pair of eights defeat Holy Cross. GW's 3V8 was first across the finish line in 5:46.60, followed by the Colonials' 4V8 in 5:58.10. Holy Cross finished in third in 6:02.30.
GW's 2nd Varsity 8 tallied an open-water victory over the Crusaders with a time of 5:45.60. Holy Cross crossed 16 seconds later in 6:01.40.
The Colonials carried the momentum into the Varsity 8 race where GW's top oarsman totaled a time of 5:35.30 to edge out Holy Cross (5:38.70) in the final 50 meters.
GW sits tied with Navy in the Oliver T. Carr Bowl standings with 39 points heading into tomorrow's abbreviated schedule. Georgetown is in third place with 33 points followed by Drexel (27), Virginia (21) and Holy Cross (21).
