ITHACA, N.Y. - The George Washington men's rowing team opened its 2016 spring season on Saturday, placing third in a trio of races against Harvard and Cornell at the Cayuga Lake Inlet.
Conditions featured a slight tailwind that built over the course of racing to stiff.
Harvard swept all three races with Cornell taking second and the Colonials finishing third.
In Varsity 8 action, Harvard finished the 2,000-meter course in 5:41.70, followed by Cornell (5:46.30) and George Washington (5:52.50).
"The Varsity 8 was off the pace early with both Cornell and Havard jumping out to an eight-seat lead in the first 500 meters," said head coach Mark Davis. "It was a little discouraging, but it shows we need to get faster at the start. But, the guys stayed with it and were only five seconds behind Cornell overall. We raced a good last three quarters of the race. Overall it was a decent race for the Varsity 8 in the first race of the spring season so i am happy with that. It shows we are little bit closer than when we faced these crews last year."
The 2nd Varsity 8 saw Harvard win in 5:38.50 with Cornell following in second in 5:46.30 and the Colonials in third with a time of 5:51.60.
"One of the best performances of the day was the 2nd Varsity 8," said Coach Davis. " They had a nice row. and were just a few seconds behind Cornell, so that is a good results for us."
Havard completed the sweep in the 3rd Varsity 8 in 5:53.70. Cornell registered a time of 5:58.40 while GW finished in 6:03.7.
"This weekend shows if we are trying to get into the top tier of the conference, we still have a ways to go," said Coach Davis. We have identified some weakness to improve upon in practice gearing up for this weekend's GW Invitational."
GW returns to action when it hosts the GW Invitational on the Potomac River next Friday-Saturday.
