WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's and women's swimming and diving teams host Rider on Saturday for the Colonials' 2016-17 home opener at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
GW completed a two-day meet from Sept. 30-Oct. 1 to open the season, where the women's squad notched victories over UNC-Asheville and Atlantic 10 foe Davidson.
Freshman Jackie Torrez led the women's side with a pair of race victories among six top-five finishes. Torrez broke into the program's all-time top-10 list in the 200 butterfly and 400 IM.
Senior Ben Fitch led the men with a first-place finish in the 100 fly while helping the Colonials grab second in a trio of relays.
Saturday marks Rider's first meet of the season. The men's side has won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) the last five consecutive seasons. Head coach Steve Fletcher was named MAAC Men's Coach of the Year for the third year in a row in 2016. The men return MAAC Swimmer of the Year Zach Molloy and NCAA Zones qualifier Joseph Walker on the boards.
The Broncs' women finished second at the 2016 MAAC Championships and return Julianna Runk, who set program records in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM.
Saturday's meet will begin at 2 p.m. Diving events will take place during two breaks in swim events.
