FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Washington men's soccer squad defeated George Mason on the road, 3-0, behind three first half goals at George Mason Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Colonials (6-3-5, 1-1-2 A-10) notched their first win in Atlantic 10 play and grabbed the first point in the year-long Revolutionary Rivalry with Mason (2-8-1, 0-3-0 A-10).
Senior Garret Heine posted a stellar performance, earning a career-high tying five points on two goals and an assist.
The Colonials tallied the first shot of the match in the third minute as sophomore Dylan Lightbourn sent a header toward the goal but missed high.
Mason answered with two shots in just over a four-minute span beginning in the eighth minute, but both missed their mark.
GW took the lead in the 23rd minute, when Heine sent a cross from the right side to find junior Oliver Curry, who volleyed the ball into the far corner of the net to put the Colonials ahead, 1-0. The goal marked Curry's second of the year as Heine added his fifth helper of the season.
The Buff and Blue doubled the lead less than three minutes later when Heine laced a shot from the top right corner of the 18-yard box into the bottom left corner of the net in the 25th minute. Redshirt senior Oliver De Thier was credited with the assist.
Heine scored again in the 36th minute, when his shot found the top of the net off of a bounce from five yards out to give GW a 3-0 advantage. Senior Tobi Adewole issued the helper.
Mason came out with a quick shot in the second half, missing wide in the 47th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Thor Arne Höfs made his first save of the day in the 49th minute on another Patriots' shot.
In the 57th minute, Curry's shot was blocked to earn the Colonials a corner kick. De Thier placed a header on goal, but Mason's keeper made the save to prevent another goal.
GW kept possession of the ball as senior Spiros Tsakos took a shot of his own after another corner kick, but the Patriots' defense blocked the attempt.
Curry continued his aggressive play in the 63rd minute with another shot on goal, but a save halted the threat.
The Buff and Blue nearly added another in the 71st minute as Tsakos' shot after a corner kick hit the crossbar.
The Colonials kept the pressure on, issuing two shots a minute apart by senior Alex Portela and sophomore Alastair Berry in the 85th minute.
Mason took one last shot in the final minute, but the attempt went wide.
Heine is now tied with Lightbourn for a team-high four goals on the season, but leads the squad with 13 points (4g, 5a).
The clean sheet marked GW's seventh of the season - all with Höfs in the net.
The Colonials continue A-10 play on Saturday when Saint Joseph's visits the GW Soccer Field during the Colonials' Spirit Week and GW Soccer Alumni Weekend.
