DAVIDSON, N.C. - The George Washington women's swimming and diving squad wrapped a two-day season-opening meet with a pair of victories on Saturday at Davidson's Charles A. Cannon Pool. The Colonials notched wins over the host Wildcats and UNC-Asheville.
The Buff and Blue edged Atlantic 10 foe Davidson, 176.50-175.50, and downed UNC-Asheville, 230-116. The Colonials fell to two-time Division II champion Queens, 200-146. Overall in the two-day contest the Colonials tallied five first-place finishes.
Freshman Jackie Torrez finished a stellar career-opening meet with a victory in the 400 IM (4:33.54) and a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.25). Her time in the 400 IM puts her ninth on GW's all-time top 10 list. Sophomore Emily Zhang placed third in that same event (4:37.81).
Emily Zhang posted another second-place finish when she teamed up with seniors Lauren Law and Selin Ozturk and freshman Lynn Zhang in the 400 freestyle relay (3:33.81).
Freshman Gemma Athlerley and sophomore Miranda Simon added runner-up finishes of their own, as Atherley touched the wall in 2:08.30 in the 200 backstroke and Simon tallied 217.20 points on the 3-meter boards.
Simon continued a strong day with a score of 221.85 on the 1-meter boards to take third. Junior Iman Lee (192.45) and freshman Gilliam Chowske (171.68) placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Lee's score marked a new personal best.
Ozturk wrapped GW's top performances, tallying a pair of third-place finishes in the 500 free (5:13.00) and 100 free (53.76).
"This weekend will definitely be a good learning experience for our program," said second-year head coach James Winchester. "The early season competitions give us the opportunity to assess our weaknesses and put us in a stronger position for success down the road."
The Colonials return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 8, in the squad's home opener against Rider at the Charles E. Smith Center.
