WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's rowing team won six races and totaled 111 points to finish in second place in the Oliver T. Carr Bowl standings at the 27th George Washington Invitational on Saturday afternoon on the Potomac River.
Navy won both the Carr Bowl (117 points) and the Gilbert H. Hood Trophy, awarded to the top-scoring program (225 points). Georgetown finished in third place in the Carr Bowl standings with 99 points followed by Holy Cross (54), Virginia (48) and Gonzaga (48).
GW swept Holy Cross across three races in the morning session where conditions were breezy with occasional gusts.
The 3rd Varsity 8 banked 12 points towards GW's Carr Bowl point total with an eight-second victory over Holy Cross. GW finished in 5:57.70 with the Crusaders following in 6:05.60.
The 2nd Varsity 8 clinched another 12 points after navigating the 2,000-meter course in 5:52.40. Holy Cross followed in 6:01.00.
The Colonials' Varsity 8 narrowly edged the Crusaders in the final 25 meters, winning by two seats in 5:45.10. Holy Cross followed close behind in 5:46.20. The win banked 15 points towards GW's total.
Strong winds resulted in a 15-20 mph tailwind in the afternoon session as the Colonials faced Gonzaga.
The 2nd Varsity 8 was first on the water and defeated Gonzaga by a three-second margin. The Colonials recorded a time of 5:45.00 while the Bulldogs finished in 5:48.00 to earn 12 points.
The Varsity 8 earned another narrow victory, finishing in 5:38.70 compared to Gonzaga's time of 5:43.40, to clinch 15 points.
GW raced two boats in the 3rd Varsity 8 race and finished 1-2 over Gonzaga. The 3V8 took first in 5:51.90 followed by the 4V8 in 5:55.50. Gonzaga took third in 6:10.70.
GW returns to action when it faces Columbia's lightweights next Saturday in Overpeck Park, New Jersey.
