WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's swimming and diving team was edged by Drexel, 154.5-144.5, on Saturday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
A quintet of Colonials led the Buff and Blue on the afternoon, as seniors Janica Lee and Morgan Zebley each won two events and claimed two second place finishes, sophomore Carly Whitmer won two individual races, freshman Hannah Kopydlowski was a part of two winning relays and sophomore Lauren Law won an event and earned three second place finishes.
The 200-yard medley relay of freshman Abigail Fusco, Lee, Zebley and Kopydlowski opened the meet with a first place finish in 1:48.38. The team of junior Maggie Hofstadter, Zebley, Law and Kopydlowski wrapped the day with a first place tie with the Dragons in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:38.18.
Whitmer won the 200-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 2:08.26, while Law followed in second in 2:11.47 and senior Bianca Valencia earned third in 2:11.90. Whitmer also won the 100 fly in 57.93 seconds, and Zebley finished in 58.24 seconds for second place. Valencia finished in 59.89 for third and freshman Phoebe Turner finished in 1:01.33 for fourth.
Lee won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:10.20 and Law finished in 2:11.69 for a second place finish.
In the 200 free, Law (1:55.51) and junior Madison Reinker (2:00.26) took home second and third. Reinker also finished second in the 1,000 free with a time of 10:39.30, and senior Brittany Liedholm finished fourth in 11:32.66. Reinker, Fusco and Vanderbilt claimed second, third and fourth in the 500 free with times of 5:11.57, 5:25.06 and 5:27.47.
Fusco and classmate Tatyana Smolyansky earned second and third in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in at 1:00.11 and 1:00.95, respectively. Fusco (2:08.96), Smolyansky (2:09.92) and junior Hannah Schaefer (2:17.63) then finished second, third and fourth in the 200 back.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Lee (1:07.78), junior Lauren Steagall (1:07.84) and classmate Mara Debnekoff (1:09.33) claimed second through fourth. The trio also earned second, third and fourth in the 200 breast as Lee clocked in at 2:27.66, Steagall finished in 2:31.42 and Debnekoff finished in 2:33.59.
Kopydlowski earned third in the 50 free in 24.96 seconds, followed by Hofstadter in fourth in 25.15 and Turner in fifth in 25.37. Zebley (54.27), Kopydlowski (55.19) and Turner (55.20) took home second, fourth and fifth in the 100 free.
Sophomore Jessica Ryabin finished fourth in the 1-meter dive with 178.13 points and freshman Iman Lee finished in fifth with 145.88 points. Ryabin (159.68) also finished fourth in the 3-meter dive while Lee (140.70) took fifth.
GW hits the road for Towson on Saturday, Nov. 8 for a 1 p.m. meet.
