GW Women's Swimming Finishes Second at Potomac Relay Invitational

WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's swimming team opened the 2011-12 season Friday at the Potomac Relay Invitational hosted by American University. The Colonials finished in an impressive second place with 86 total points.
Towson finished first with 118 points, followed by Georgetown in third with 78 points and host American in fourth with 52 points. Mary Washington finished in fifth with 38 points and Howard landed sixth with 20 points.
The 200-yard medley relay team of freshmen Morgan Zebley, Janica Lee, Bianca Valencia and sophomore Sloan Saunders claimed top honors with a time of 1:50.61. The squad finished two full seconds ahead of second-place finishing Towson. GW sophomores Lindsay Moore, Rachael Johnston, Emily Kane and Sydney Saunders finished fifth in the race in 1:55.79.
The Colonials landed second in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Melissa Fernandez, Lee and sophomores Taylor Cole and Sydney Saunders touched the wall in 8:00.35. The 'B' team of freshman Brittany Liedholm, senior Kayla Jensen and sophomores Erica Becker and Chelsey Weatherford finished seventh with a time of 8:35.70.
In the 300-yard butterfly relay, GW's Valencia, Kane and Zebley finished second with a time of 2:57.55. The team finished just .5 seconds behind first place Towson. The 'B' team of Weatherford, Sloan Saunders and Cole clocked in at 3:11.15 for a seventh-place finish.
GW picked up its third second-place finish in the 300-yard backstroke relay. Zebley, Weatherford and Moore touched the wall in 3:06.16. Lee, Alexandra Gorki and Johnston clocked in at 3:27.80 in the 300-yard breaststroke relay for second place behind Towson.
Finishing just half of a second behind Towson, the 500-yard freestyle relay squad of Sloan Saunders, Fernandez, Cole and Lee finished with a time of 4:46.94. Weatherford, Kane, Neville and Johnston finished fifth in the 400-yard medley relay, touching the wall in 4:25.34.
The 1,000-yard freestyle relay duo of Cole and Becker nabbed fourth place with a time of 11:02.43. Zebley, Fernandez, Sydney Saunders and Sloan Saunders teamed up for a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing with a time of 1:40.90.
The Colonials return to action on Friday, Oct. 14, in a tri-meet with Catholic and American.
