GW Swimmers Earn Top Finishes at URI Invitational

KINGSTON, RI - The GW men's and women's swimming teams took on Atlantic 10 foes Massachusetts, La Salle and host Rhode Island at the URI Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan 14-15. The men's team finished third with 344.5 points, while the women's squad tallied 278.5 for fourth place. The women's squad had 13 top-5 finishes at the four-team event, while the men's squad had 21 top-five finishes.
The men's squad tallied five second-place finishes before earning first-place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The all-sophomore relay squad of Niklas Glenesk, Phillip Graeter, Luke Quimby and Alex Etz finished with the top time of 3:12.53.
Glenesk took second in the 500-yard free (4:43.63), the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.69) and the 1000-yard freestyle (9:46.13) while Graeter took second in the 400-yard individual medley (4:09.64) and freshman Niccolo Wilson tied for second in the 100-yard freestyle (48.34).
Freshman Caroline Myers led the Colonials with two victories. Myers won the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.12), beating the second-place finisher by four seconds, and the 1000-yard freestyle (10:15.05). She also took second in the 400-yard individual medley (4:37.92), teaming up with Sloan Saunders, Lindsay Moore and Sydney Saunders for the 200-yard free relay team to take fourth (1:41.87), and swam the lead leg the 400-yard freestyle relay team to third (3:41.37).
Sydney Saunders also scored points for the Colonials when she finished second place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.66), as Rachael Johnston took third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:28.49).
Moore finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.32) and third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.46).
The Colonials next take on local rival Georgetown on Saturday, Jan. 22 at the Hoyas' McCarthy Pool beginning at 1:00 p.m.
