Men's Basketball Handles Howard, 81-63

WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington scored 45 second-half points to pull away from Howard for a 81-63 triumph Saturday afternoon at Charles E. Smith Center. It was GW's 10th victory if the season matching last season's win total.
Damian Hollis led the Colonials with a game-high 18 points on 5-for-8 shooting and 8-of-9 free throws along with eight rebounds. Tony Taylor added 13 points and four assists.
The teams traded the lead 10 times in a first half that saw both squads shoot 37 percent. Howard nailed 7-for-16 from long range including three by Curtis White, but the Bison committed 10 turnovers and the Colonials converted them into 14 points to take a 36-32 lead into the locker room.
GW opened the second half with a 16-6 run for a 52-38 advantage with 14:17 showing. Howard closed the gap to 52-44 on back-to-back three-pointers by Dadrian Collins and Kandi Mukole at the 13:27 mark. It was as close as the Bison would get as GW responded with a Joseph Katuka layup and a pair of free throws from Bryan Bynes to expand the Colonials' lead to 14 (58-44) at the 10:43 mark. GW led by as much as 22 after a pair of free throws by Hermann Opoku with 3:21 showing.
Howard (1-13) had three players in double figures led by Collins' team-high 17 points and Mukole's eight rebounds and 14 points. Mukole finished with 4-5 from three-point range while Curtis White added 12 points for the Bison.
GW shot 50 percent (25-50) from the field and held Howard to 41.5 percent (22-53) shooting. The Bison converted 12-of-24 three-pointers but committed 20 turnovers to just nine for GW.
GW (10-3, 0-0 A-10) next opens Atlantic 10 Conference play Wednesday, Jan. 6 on the road at St. Bonaventure (7-6, 0-0 A-10). The game is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m. from Olean, NY, and will be broadcast live on 1500 AM and 820 AM and as well as online at www.FederalNewsRadio.com.
