Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss of Season Versus Winthrop

FARMVILLE, VA - The George Washington men's soccer team sustained its first loss of the season on Friday, falling 2-1 against Winthrop in the first game of the Lancer Invitational, hosted by Longwood University. The Colonials played even with the Eagles despite being a man down for more than 75 minutes, but an even-strength goal in the 12th minute proved to be the difference.
Sophomore forward Andy Stadler scored his second goal of the season in the 40th minute to bring GW (2-1) within one goal at 2-1, but the Colonials could manage only three second-half shots while playing with 10 men. Senior Abimbola Pedro recorded his second assist of the season on the play.
Daniel Revivo's one-time shot in the 18-yard box in the 12th minute spotted Winthrop (2-1) a 1-0 edge. GW freshman defender Kory Trott was sent off with a red card just over two minutes later, forcing the Colonials to play a man-down. The Eagles took advantage in the 33rd minute when Saidi Isaac, the Big South preseason Player of the Year, scored the game-winning goal on an assist from Miguel Casajuana.
Senior goalkeeper Greg Yahr kept GW in the match by stopping a career-high 10 shots. The Colonials were outshot, 19-10, and out-cornered, 12-5. Winthrop net-minder Patrick Mitrovich made one save.
The match featured two teams either ranked or receiving votes in their respective regions. The Colonials entered the contest ranked third in the adidas/NSCAA Middle Atlantic regional, while the Eagles, preseason favorites in the Big South and 2006 NCAA Tournament participants, have votes in the South Atlantic regional.
GW wraps up play at the Lancer Invitational Sunday against North Florida. Kick-off is slated for 10:00 am.
