Maryland Takes Doubleheader Over GW

COLLEGE PARK, MD - George Washington baseball (0-6) dropped a pair of games to the University of Maryland (7-2) Saturday afternoon at Shipley Field. The two teams agreed to play a doubleheader in an effort to avoid the inclement weather that has been forecasted for Sunday.
In Game One, GW played tough, trailing only 5-3, before surrendering six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and eventually falling 11-4. Junior RHP Brian Frazier (0-2) was tagged with the loss after he started the game and lasted six innings. He finished his day with seven hits and two earned runs allowed with three strikeouts.
Derek Haese got the start for the Colonials in Game Two and did not allow a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning. The senior gave up six runs over six innings while recording four strikeouts. Freshman Scott Swinson (0-2) pitched the final two innings of the game for the loss. Offensively for GW, junior Gavin Swanson went 2-for-4 and drove in two of the Colonials' four runs.
GW senior Michael Parker continued his torrid start to the 2007 season. In Saturday's two games at Maryland, Parker recorded four hits, four RBI and two doubles. For the year, the shortstop is hitting .423 (11-for-26) and is leading the Colonials in slugging percentage (.654), hits, runs batted in (4) and doubles (6). His OPS (on-base plus slugging) of 1.077 is good for second on the club (freshman Curtis Eward is at 1.090 in 11 at bats).
The Colonials 0-6 record is their least successful start to a season since they began 1996 with an identical mark.
George Washington will look to earn their first win of the year on Tuesday when they travel to MD-Eastern Shore to take on the Hawks (1-6) at 2:30 p.m.
