Princeton, NJ - The George Washington Women's Rowing team traveled to Princeton, NJ to compete in the three-mile long Princeton Chase this past weekend. While the team was scheduled to race in several events, the high winds led to the cancellation of all but the open eights race.
The varsity eight of coxswain Mansi Shah, Liz Cavanaugh, Angela Costales, Jean Williamson, Kate Austin, Hilary Goldberg, Jenna Feistritzer, Liz Gordon and Erin Brandt placed 22nd out of 55 crews, which pleased Head Coach Robert McCracken. "I was pleased that the first eight was able to close the gap on many of the teams that finished ahead of us at the Charles, said McCracken. Despite the encouraging finish, McCracken still believes that much improvement is needed. We still have a lot of speed to gain, but I think we are moving in the right direction," continued McCracken.
The second eight of coxswain Gina Fernandes, Bess Austin, Ashley McCawley, Katelyn Radack, Ashley Larrimore, Shannon Kelley, Emily Geise, Bonnie Scott and Brandi Kerrigan had difficulty navigating through the heavy winds which led to a 47th place finish. "While this was the first race for most of the people in the boat, I don't think we handled the race day pressure very well. This boat is capable of rowing much better and I hope we can get things together before next week," added McCracken.
The varsity crews are back in action on Saturday, November 4 at the Head of the Occoquan, while the novice squad will sport the buff and blue for the first time in a scrimmage against regional rivals Georgetown and Virginia on the Potomac River.
