ST. BONAVENTURE, NY - Senior Joseph Siegel scored in the 90th minute to force overtime, but the George Washington men's soccer team allowed a goal in the first minute of extra time to fall at St. Bonaventure, 2-1, in Atlantic 10 Conference action on Sunday.
Bonnies' freshman Sam Maheu netted the game-winning goal just 46 seconds into the first overtime period to drop the Colonials to 1-3-1 in the A-10 this season. Siegel's equalizing goal was his fourth goal of the season and 11th of his career.
The two teams battled through 78 minutes of scoreless soccer until Jon Lopez headed in a cross from Kevin Omokhua to spot St. Bonaventure (1-11-2, 1-2-2 A-10) a 1-0 lead with 11:50 remaining in regulation.
GW (4-7-2) sophomore David Leon had a chance to tie the match in the 82nd minute, but his penalty kick aimed toward the lower left corner was saved by Ken Lish. Siegel re-directed a Leon free-kick past Lish in the waning seconds to send the match to overtime. Fellow freshman Mike Briscoe was credited with his first career assist on the play.
Omokhua slotted a pass through the Colonials' defense to Maheu, who fired a shot past junior goalkeeper Matt Scheer to the lower left corner of the net to give the Bonnies their first victory of the season.
GW was out-shot by St. Bonaventure, 11-10, and out-cornered, 10-7. Scheer made three saves in suffering his first career loss. Lish also turned away three shots.
The Colonials host their final home matches of the season at Mount Vernon Field next weekend, beginning with Dayton on Friday, October 20, at 3:00 pm. GW entertains Xavier on Sunday, October 22, at 1:00 pm.
