WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington men's soccer team played its third consecutive overtime match on Friday, battling Dayton to a 1-1 draw in Atlantic 10 Conference action at Mount Vernon Field.
GW (4-7-3, 1-3-2 A-10) finished 0-1-1 in a pair of overtime matches last week, tying regionally-ranked Fordham, 3-3, on October 13, before falling to St. Bonaventure, 2-1, two days later.
Senior Joseph Siegel scored for the third straight match, notching his fifth goal of the season in the 32nd minute to give GW a 1-0 lead. Siegel poked in a shot from in front of the Dayton goal following junior Abimbola Pedro's header on sophomore David Leon's corner kick. Siegel now has 30 career points on 12 goals and six assists.
Dayton (4-9-1, 0-5-1 A-10) tallied the equalizer just six minutes later when Joe Olwig finished a deflected crossing pass from Zach Weiss.
The match featured a number of offensive chances for both teams, but neither could capitalize on more than two of the combined 36 shots. GW led in shots (21-15) and shots on goal (7-5), but Dayton enjoyed the edge in corner kicks (11-10) and overtime shots (4-1). Colonials' junior goalkeeper Greg Yahr made four stops, while Flyers' net-minder Nick Tarkany posted six.
GW's best opportunities to net the game-winner came late in the second half. In the 86th minute, rookie Andrew Stadler cracked a low, hard shot from 15 yards away that hit the left post. One minute later, junior Thomas Stuber found himself on the end of junior Joachim Walker's cross, but Tarkany was in position to make the save. Dayton almost netted the golden goal in the first overtime session, but Yahr made a spectacular, diving save on Simeon Zaprianov's volley toward the upper left corner of the goal.
The Colonials will celebrate Senior Day in their home finale against Xavier on Sunday. Siegel and Jeremiah Burke will be honored prior to the match's 1:00 pm kickoff.
