NEWARK, DE - The GW men's soccer team received a goal each from junior Arturo Pedroso (Coral Gables, FL) and senior Andre Chapman (Wilbraham, MA) on its way to shutting out Delaware, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Delaware Mini-Stadium. The victory was the Colonials' second straight as they outshot the Fightin' Blue Hens, 20-9.
With the triumph, GW improves to 2-0-1, while Delaware falls to 0-2-1.
Pedroso netted the game winner, his first of the season, just before halftime in the 40th minute of action to give the Colonials the lead at intermission. He scored off a rebound from about five yards out with senior Jon Allen (Dobbs Ferry, NY) being credited with the assist, his first of the season after leading the Colonials with five a year ago.
The Colonials constantly applied pressure in the first half as they managed 11 shots, while limiting Delaware to just two. The defense remained solid following intermission as senior Derek Biss (Pittsfield, MA) made all three of his saves in the second half to secure his first shutout.
Chapman added an insurance goal in the 90th minute to make it 2-0 when he took a breakaway pass from senior Steve Brown at midfield and beat Fightin' Blue Hens goalie Taylor Thames for his second score of the season. Senior captain Trevor Martin (Chevy Chase, MD) led the Colonials with six shots, including three on goal, while Chapman finished with five.
GW (2-0-1) is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 17, when it travels to Fairfax, VA, to take on George Mason at 7 p.m.
