WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW volleyball team scored a program-high 40 points in game one of a three-game sweep of Fordham in an Atlantic 10 Conference match Sunday afternoon at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The Colonials won by the scores 40-38, 30-28, 30-27 in one hour, 37 minutes. It marked the completion of season sweep over Fordham. The Colonials defeated the Rams in five games on Oct. 16 in the Bronx.
GW senior Abigail Hatter (Manassas, VA) had a near-flawless match hitting a career-high .857 with 12 kills and no errors in 14 attacks.
GW's 40 points in game one was the most scored in a game since the Colonials scored 35 in a victory over Duquesne during the 2001 season, the first year of rally scoring.
GW sophomore Janine Brown (Jacksonville, FL) led the Colonials with 14 kills and added 12 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Colonials junior Juliene McLaughlin (Lindsay, ONT) added 10 kills and 14 digs for her team-leading 10th double-double of the season. Junior setter Kaimana Lee (Wailuku, HI) assisted on 46 of GW's 56 kills and added 10 digs.
Fordham (18-13, 4-7 A-10) was led by Marija Markovic's 18 kills and she hit .515 to go with 10 blocks while Jamee Stimson added 11 kills while hitting .476.
After trailing most of game one before knotting the score at 24-24, the teams traded points and were still tied at 38-38 on a kill by McLaughlin. A Fordham attack error led to game point and a kill by GW junior Kelly Kabbes (Cary, NC) ended the longest game in GW volleyball history.
Game two was nearly as even as game one and was tied at 21-21 before the Colonials went on a 6-0 run for a 27-21 bulge. Fordham responded with seven of the next nine points to get within 29-27 before a kill by Shannon Parks (Marietta, GA) gave the Colonials a 2-0 lead in games.
Following the 10-minute intermission, the Colonials came out strong in game three and built a 9-3 lead and maintained a comfortable lead at 28-19 before the Rams made a final push. A pair of kills by Markovic and a series of attack errors by GW got the Rams to within 29-27 before a Kabbes kill ended the match.
GW (12-15, 5-8 A-10) next hosts Maryland-Eastern Shore Friday in a 7:00 p.m. match at Smith Center.
