WASHINGTON, DC - Seniors Darrell Andruski of the men's cross country team and Cathy Joens of women's basketball were named the 2004 recipients of the J. Dallas Shirley Outstanding Senior Male Athlete Award and the Lynn George Outstanding Senior Woman Athlete Award, respectively, at George Washington University's annual Senior Honors Luncheon Monday.
Andruski, a senior from Clifton Park, NY, was named to both the Atlantic 10's All-Conference and Academic All-Conference for the second time in as many seasons. After battling through injuries early in the season, Darrell concluded the season as the top Colonials' finisher in the final three races. He will leave GW as the holder of the top two times by a GW runner at the Atlantic 10 Meet.
Joens, from Irvine, CA, was a four-year letterwinner who capped her career by becoming GW's all-time leading three-point shooter and its third all-time leading scorer. She was named AP All-America Honorable Mention and Kodak All-America regional finalist before being drafted by the New York Liberty of the WNBA.
Men's Rower Eric Cartier (Belford, NJ) and Women's Cross Country runner Emily Jadwin (Mt. Laurel, NJ) won the Senior Male and Female Athlete Academic Awards, respectively. Top academic teams were Men's Rowing (3.22 GPA) and Women's Gymnastics (3.45 GPA). Also honored were 24 Most Valuable Players, including seven repeat winners, representing each sport and the Spirit Program. Among the 24 MVPs were four-time winners Matt Hane of the men's tennis team and men's water polo standout, Patrick Dodge.
