Legends Light Up GW During Weekend Celebrations
12/8/2025 2:39:00 PM | General, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Women's Track/Cross Country, Women's Volleyball, Water Polo
100+ GW Athletics alumni, six Hall of Famers, two legends honored, a pair of wins. Fifty years in the making, a celebration like nothing before it rocked GW over the weekend.

The party started Friday night at the Jack Morton Auditorium with the induction of the 2025 Athletics Hall of Fame Class. Hosted by GW baseball alumnus and Hall of Famer, Danny Rouhier, the ceremony featured video tributes to celebrate each inductee, and congratulatory remarks from President Ellen Granberg and reflections from Athletics Director Michael Lipitz that "while records and championships may define singular moments, it is people who define GW."

As morning came on Saturday, men's water polo alumni gathered for a game at the Charles E. Smith Center as the storied structure at the corner of 22nd and G was turning 50.

Then in the opening game of the day, women's basketball entertained Brown in front of new Hall of Famer Jessica Adair, GW's first WNBA Champion. Four members of the first George Washington team to play in the Smith Center 50 years ago were also on hand, reveling in their program's fourth win in its last five games in the Brown takedown.

Cross country alumnae Megan Hogan then saw her jersey honored in a halftime ceremony.

The interstitial between hoops games was an alumni reunion of all sports from all eras of George Washington athletics, where again Lipitz and Granberg thanked and lauded the legends who gathered for paving the way to the present.

In another to the past, cross country alumni gathered for a long overdue reunion where Championship rings were awarded to the university's first-ever cross country conference champions.

The nightcap truly celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Smith Center, with members of the Smith family on hand to see men's basketball send the Foggy Bottom faithful home happy with a 99-86 win against William & Mary, the first Division I foe GW defeated in the building in 1975.

At halftime of the game, GW giant and new Hall of Famer, the late Yinka Dare, was honored with his jersey near the rafters, while famed former head coach Bob Tallent, his high-scoring brother Pat, and their 1975-76 team was in attendance.

It was a weekend that will be hard to top, but inspired by the greats that graced GW throughout, George Washington student-athletes will aim to reach the peaks of yesteryear all season long in 2025-26.
