GW Spirit Squads Place in Top 10 at Nationals

DAYTONA, FL - The GW Cheer and Dance teams competed in the Chick-Fil-A College Cheer & Dance Championships finals on April 2-5 in Daytona, FL. The Colonials' Cheer team finished fifth, an improvement over last year's 11th-place finish. The GW Dance team, also known as "The First Ladies," finished ninth, improving upon their 14th-place finish last year. A total of 13 cheer squads and 22 dance teams competed to advance to the final round.
The Cheer team ended the competition in fifth place with a score of 8.48. They competed against five other teams in Division I, including Atlantic 10 opponent, Massachusetts. Stephen F. Austin State University won the Division I title with a score of 9.29. Other divisions of Cheer competition include Division IA, Division II, Junior College, All-Girl, and International Divisions.
The GW Dance team placed ninth out of 11 teams in Division I competition. Their final score was an 8.64. The Division I winner was Towson University with a score of 9.66.
The GW Cheer and Dance teams qualified for the championships in December by submitting a preliminary video. The squads then advanced by finishing in the top 10 of the preliminary rounds of competition. The Championships, sponsored by the National Cheerleaders Association, included 194 teams.
