WASHINGTON, DC (Feb. 8, 2002) - George Washington women's basketball fought off a late charge by the visiting Duquesne Dukes behind two key free throws by freshman guard Greeba Outen Barlow (Columbia, MD/River Hill) with 12 seconds left in the game to lift the Colonials to the four-point win.
The Colonials, who remained undefeated in the Atlantic 10 raising their record to 16-6 and an 11-0 conference mark, were plagued by turnovers in the first half. GW shot 53 percent from the floor in the half, but only attempted 17 field goals in the first 20 minutes, giving the ball away to the Dukes 15 times, and trailed 27-26 at the break.
GW started the second half with a 12-2 run to take a game-high nine-point lead, 38-29, with 15:22 left in the game. However, after their initial run, the Colonials entered a scoring drought that lasted nearly six minutes. The Dukes capitalized on GW's struggles from the floor, and scored eight straight points to pull within one point, 38-37 with 9:47 on the clock.
Freshmen Liz Dancause (Nashua, NH/Nashua) and Outen Barlow accounted for 10 points in a 12-5 run over the next four and a half minutes to give GW a eight-point lead, 50-42. Dancause finished with a career-high six points with three rebounds in 12 minutes of play.
The Dukes continued to chip away at the lead, despite only converting two field goals over the last five minutes of the game, and scored 12 points from the free throw line to pull within one point, 60-59 with 39 seconds remaining in the game. After sophomore guard Marsheik Witherspoon converted one of two free throws, DU guard Shiri Sharon committed an offensive foul to give the Colonials possession, then fouled Outen Barlow to stop the clock at 12 seconds. Outen Barlow was up to the challenge and converted both free throws, extending the Colonials' lead to four. DU missed a desperation three and GW ran out the clock for the victory, 63-59.
GW next heads to Richmond to face the Spiders on Sunday, Feb. 10, in a 4:00 p.m. game.
