RICHMOND, VA (Feb. 10, 2002) - The Colonials remained undefeated in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a hard-earned victory versus the Richmond, topping the Spiders 85-80, in a shootout at the Robins Center.
The Colonials (17-6, 12-0) won despite the absence of starting forwards, freshman Anna Monta?ana and junior Erica Lawrence due to minor injuries. GW was able to keep pace with UR's explosive offense with contributions from their corps of freshmen who came off the bench to pour in 25 points.
Freshmen Geeba Outen Barlow, Liz Dancause and Kelly Wright all played season-highs in minutes, with Dancause and Wright setting career-highs in scoring with 10 and five points respectively. Dancause added a career-high six rebounds and four steals in her 23 minutes of play while Outen Barlow scored 10 points in 17 minutes of the court.
GW and UR battled back and forth through a game that saw 13 ties and 11 lead changes. GW charged back from an early seven-point deficit in the first half tying the Spiders six times before taking the lead with three minute left in the half and taking a two-point edge into the locker room at the break, 42-40.
A 10-2 run to begin the second half gave the Colonials a game-high 10-point lead, 54-44 at 16:45. The Spiders responded with a 10-0 run of their own over the next three minutes to tie the game. The two teams traded baskets and the lead for the majority of the half, with neither team gaining a significant edge.
GW took the lead for good with 4:09 left in the game when sophomore center Ugo Oha made two of her team-high 18 points to give the Colonials a 79-78 lead. GW's defense blunted the Spiders' attack in the closing minutes, limiting to one field goal in the last four minutes, and forcing UR to foul the Colonials to stop the clock. GW converted all six of their free throws to notch their 12th conference victory, 85-80.
Junior Cathy Joens scored 16 and Lindsey Davidson added 13 to round out five Colonials in double figures. UR was led by Ebony Tanner who scored a game-high 20 points in the losing effort.
GW returns home to host Dayton on Friday, Feb. 15 in a 7:00 p.m. game.
