WASHINGTON, DC (Feb. 15) - George Washington extended its winning streak to 13 games and remained undefeated in the Atlantic 10 with a 63-56 victory over the visiting Dayton Flyers.
GW ran out to an early six-point lead, making their first five field goals of the game. UD stormed back and took the lead at the 10:16 mark behind a seven-minute, 11-4 run. The Flyers built their advantage to eight points, holding the Colonials to three field goals over a nine-minute stretch.
The Colonials overcame the eight-point deficit with a 15-0 run, breaking out of their shooting woes to take a seven-point lead, 31-24 with 47 seconds left in the half. GW would take a two-point lead into the locker room as the Flyers closed the half with a 5-0 run.
The game would remain tight for most of the second half with the two teams knotted at 49-49 with three minutes remaining in the contest. A three-point shot by Cathy Joens gave GW the lead at 2:33, and the Colonials would break the game open off a Marsheik Witherspoon layup, and a Lindsey Davidson steal off the subsequent inbound pass which she converted to give GW an eight-point lead that the Flyers would not overcome.
GW was led by Joens and Davidson who each scored 13 points in the contest. Davidson had an all-around solid game, grabbing eight rebounds and adding five steals and four assists. Ugo Oha scored 12 points and collected eight rebounds while Witherspoon matched a career-high with 10 points.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday, Feb. 17, when they host conference foe Xavier University in a 12:00 p.m. game at Smith Center.
