Post-Game Comments
[on shooting the free throws to win the game]
"I reminded myself to shoot it the same way I shoot them in practice. That way, there's no pressure. I like to shoot in situations like this, and I was lucky that at least one went in....It doesn't matter if we win by one or by 20, as long as we win."
[on scoring in a clutch situation, similar to the Temple game]
"I guess it's because I've been playing basketball for a long time. I like close games and feel confident about what I have to do if the ball gets to me."
GW Coach Joe McKeown
"Today reminded me of the game against Drake in the second round of NCAAs [in 1995]. We were down 17 with 3 minutes to go. The crowd got excited. We'd been struggling the whole game...of course, Tajama [Abraham] was on my side then, not on the other bench."
"Rough game, when your first lead comes with four seconds left in the game, I guess that's when you want to have it."
"Richmond is the first team all year to shoot over 50% against us. I'm very impressed with the way they played today. We're gong to have to really do a much better job down there."
[what he told the team during the time out at :42 left]
"We were saying make your shots, dont panic, go to the basket hard, try to stop the clock, trap ,and if you can't get the steal out of the trap, foul...it all sounds good. Some things have to happen for you. I remember Joe Gibbs saying that sometimes you do things out of panic and end up looking smart. We got a few breaks, made a few big plays down the stretch...we'll take it. Richmond played awfully well today."
"This is not a game you're going to analze a lot. Fortunately, we played hard at the end, and put ourselves in position to win. That's the important thing. But I'm really disappointed with the way we good played defensively. We were out of position all night. We gave [C Krystn] Gull a lot of looks at the basket and she took advantage of it. We had trouble keeping up with their pace."
[on not having Elena Vishnikova for the game]
"She's been our best player since we started the conference. Anytime you take out your leading scorer and rebounderwho is playing at the top of her game, you're going to have to adjust to that. I thought the other night at Duquesne, we played really well without her. Today, we missed her."
[on having Tajama Abraham on the opponent's bench]
"She's been like my daughter since I recruited her back in 1993. She's one of those people you love to be around. She never has a bad day...It's hard seeing her on the other bench. She's part of why GW is a great program. She helped make us a national power from 93 to 97. She was part of that group that put us on the map. And it's also because of the kind of person she is. She was a great role model for our players, and I'm sure she is for the Richmond players."
