WASHINGTON, DC (Aug. 31, 2001) - Riding an offensive surge, the Colonials cruised to a 9-1 victory over the Howard Bison in the opening round of the first annual DC College Cup at Georgetown's Harbin Field.
In a game marked by physical play, the Colonials converted three free kicks into scores after Bison infractions. Senior Michael Goldman (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) scored at the three-minute mark on a perfectly placed direct kick outside the box, arcing over the keeper's fingertips to get GW on the board. Junior Matt Osborne (Bingham Notts, England/Tootill Comp.) would also convert two penalty kicks in the half to give the Colonials a 3-1 lead going into the break.
GW came storming out of the gate to start the second half behind senior Matt Pilkington's (Manchester, England/Sheffield Hallam Univ.) strong play. Pilkington scored three goals in a span of 10 minutes off tremendous feeds from his teammates. The hat trick would be plenty of padding to secure the victory, as Howard played most of the second half with a two-man disadvantage after losing players to ejections.
Sophomore Jeremy Catlin (Clarksville, MD/Oakland Mills HS)scored two goals off the bench and sophomore Fabio Andrade (Stoughton, MA/Xaverian Brothers Acad.) put one between the pipes as the match wound down.
The Colonials (1-0-0) will face American (1-0-0) who defeated Georgetown 1-0 in overtime to advance to the 2:30 p.m. championship match on Sunday, September 2, at Harbin Field.
