WASHINGTON, DC (Oct. 8, 1999) -- Massachusetts tallied two second half goals and overcame a sluggish start to defeat George Washington 2-1 this afternoon at South Riding Field in Atlantic 10 Conference women's soccer action.
After a scoreless first half which saw George Washington dominate Massachusetts behind strong midfield play, Massachusetts grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute on a Kara Green tally. Sarah Cook slipped a pass into the right side of the GW box and Green finished a 13-yard shot for the score.
GW drew level in the 75th minute when Malynda Nichol lofted a 25-yard shot from beyond the right corner of the Massachusetts box toward the back post. The shot bounced in traffic several yards in front of the goal and skipped past Massachusetts goalkeeper Angie Napoli, who appeared to be screened from the shot.
Massachsuetts countered just four minutes later to take a 2-1 lead. Katelyn Jones lined a 35-yard free kick from the left wing toward the back post, which Cindy Carceau slammed home with a diving header from six yards out.
Napoli recorded two saves between the pipes for Massachusetts while Shannon Ashfield tallied six for GW. The Minutewomen outshot GW 15-8 for the match after GW posted a 6-5 advantage in the first half.
