Nicole “Doc” Cervantes is in her second season at GW for the 2018-19 season. During the first season with the Colonials, Cervantes coached the middles and focused on defensive schemes and development. She is also serving at the Colonials’ Camp Director for volleyball, continuing the tradition of adult open gyms and adding youth training opportunities both at Foggy Bottom, and throughout the DMV area.
Prior to GW, Cervantes spent seven years at Southeast Missouri State where she held both Recruiting Coordinator and Camp Directing titles. During her tenure at Southeast, the Redhawks won 87 games, attended the conference tournament six times, and put four athletes on all-conference teams for a total of ten awards.
Cervantes mentored four-time All-OVC performer Emily Coon (2010-13). Coon garnered all-newcomer honors as a freshman and was named to the All-OVC team all three seasons after. Coon was a top blocker in the league throughout her career. Cervantes also helped guide Taylor Masterson to all-newcomer honors during her first season in 2012 and All-OVC honors in 2014. Finally, she pushed Nzingha Clarke to three of her four All-OVC honors from 2014-16.
After her first season at Southeast, the Redhawks never fell below third in conference blocks per set. In 2013, the Redhawks middle blockers proved to be impenetrable walls on the net. The Redhawks were the top blockers in the league, averaging 2.39 blocks per set. In all, Southeast posted 316 total blocks; 72.5 more than the second-most team. The Redhawks’ 2.39 blocks/set mark was up from 2012 (2.21), which ranked second in the league. Both years are up dramatically from 2010 (her first season) when they averaged 1.66.
Cervantes served as Southeast’s Camp Director, increased the camp attendance each summer and added more camp opportunities to the Redhawks’ camp offerings. She developed Tuesday Clinics, to provide a low-cost, low-commitment opportunity for young community members to enhance their volleyball skills and knowledge of the game.
While working full-time at Southeast, Cervantes completed her Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis in December of 2016 from the University of Missouri - Columbia. Her goal was to be a role model for her student-athletes and push them to excel in the classroom as well as on the court.
Prior to Southeast, Cervantes served as a graduate assistant coach at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania. During her graduate assistantship, Cervantes assisted with recruiting, match and practice video breakdown, while also training middles and blocking for ESU. She earned her Master’s Degree in Sports Management in 2011 from ESU.
Cervantes graduated from Franklin Pierce University, a Division II school in New Hampshire, where she was a four-time All-Northeast 10 Conference player.
During her junior year, she was named second team all-region in 2007. She was the first player to ever be named to an all-region team in Franklin Pierce’s 20-year program history. Her 159 total blocks led the Northeast-10 Conference, as did her 1.26 blocks per game. She was also named team MVP that season.
At the completion of her four-year career at Franklin Pierce, Cervantes guided the Ravens to four consecutive Northeast-10 conference championship appearances. She was also named conference player of the week five times and set the school career record for kills (1,271) and blocks (493).
She also excelled in the classroom at Pierce, as she graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications and a minor in Creative Writing. She was a three-time first team academic all-conference selection.
Cervantes is a native of Ashburn, Virginia and currently lives in her hometown with her wife, Kandice and their two dogs.
