Cross Country Readies for Opening Night in Leesburg

WASHINGTON- The GW cross country team kicks off its fall season with opening night on Friday in Leesburg, Va., in the Trials of Miles Opening XC Night presented by New Balance and Tuscarora High School XC.Â
Head Coach Terry Weir will lead the Buff & Blue into 2025 in his 15th season at the helm of both programs. The Revolutionaries return all four All-Conference veterans from last season, with All-Conference honorees Jacob Heredia and Michael Bohlke returning for their senior seasons and sophomores Charles Mbuthia and Amelia Ogawa returning after their All-Rookie years. Â
Looking to compete with the top of the pack this season, the A-10 and the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released their preseason rankings on Wednesday. The GW men checked in at No. 4 in the conference preseason poll and earned a No. 15 Mid-Atlantic Regional ranking, while the women fell just behind at No. 5 in the league poll.Â

The race will be held at Morven Park in Leesburg, Va. 10 men's runners will compete in a 6k course, while 13 women will be challenged in a 5k course. This year, three other teams are competing in the race; the Revolutionaries will face DMV foes Georgetown, Maryland and Johns Hopkins on the course Friday evening.Â
Georgetown enters the season nationally ranked, with their women's squad picking up a No. 12 national ranking and the men's group checking in at No. 28 from USTFCCCA. The Blue Jays enter the fall season ranked fourth nationally for the men and fifth for the women, per the USTFCCCA, and are also the No. 1 ranked favorites in the Centennial Conference. For Maryland, the women earned a No. 9 preseason ranking in the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region.Â
