The atmospheric river that has descended on DC couldn't cloud the sunshine emanating from Betts Theatre in the University Student Center at GW on Tuesday afternoon when 20 members of George Washington's baseball team and rowing team became the first to graduate in the university's Class of 2025.
Due to competitions this weekend when the baseball team will be in Saint Louis vying for a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship and rowing will be racing for a title in New Jersey, the grads, friends and family were treated to all of the trimmings of a typical commencement.
Student speaker Tim Nicholson, who overcame injury this season to help his team on the stretch run, implored the attendees not to underestimate the power of encouragement. "Your words and actions can influence those around you," he said.
GW's 19th President Ellen M. Granberg then shared with the group what she has learned from them in her time leading the university. Her three takeaways: 1. Voices matter at GW. 2. Engagement is one of GW's superpowers. 3. What it means to Raise High.
President Granberg concluded, "you, as Revolutionaries, will make tomorrow a better day."
Charging the graduates to "lift your voices and sing," she conferred degrees with what Nicholson previously identified. Words of encouragement. "Go boldly, Raise High, and show the world what it means to be a GW Rev."
Before the alma mater and Fight Song were sung, baseball's Ty Acker, Tyler Blankenship, Teddy Brennan, Cade Davis, Michael Foltz Jr., Sam Gates, Graham Jeffries, Shugy Klein, Brayden Kurtz, Tim Nicholson and Ellis Schwartz, and rowing's Mia Cremona, Flannery Dunn, Anna Golbus, Mary Grace Konopka, Grace McCann, Chambers Miller, Eliza Price, Kristen Rupinen and Katana Yu had their chance in the sun, flanked by their head coach and president, as the newest alumni of the George Washington University.Â
