On Wednesday night at halftime of the GW men's basketball game vs. George Mason, GW student-athletes who qualified for Athletics' Dean's List were honored. GW President Ellen Granberg, Provost Chris Bracey and Athletics Director Michael Lipitz celebrated student-athletes who earned a 3.0 or better GPA in the spring or fall of 2024.
Of the nearly 400 student-athletes competing for the university's 20 varsity teams, 82% earned a 3.0 grade point average or higher last semester, as the department achieved a cumulative 3.39 GPA in the fall, after taking home a 3.40 in the spring. As impressively, nearly half of GW's student-athletes (49%) earned a 3.5+ GPA last semester. Remarkably, 41 student-athletes notched a perfect 4.0 in the spring of 2024.
Under the guidance of Assistant Athletics Director James Hellekjaer, teamed with Natalie Ellard, Stephen McNamara, Joe Strickland, Leah Fishman and Bryn Boznanski - as well as the many academic tutors for the athletics - the department flourished, a testament to the tireless work of our distinguished Faculty and their commitment to higher education.
Also on Wednesday night, Dr. Irene Foster was awarded this year's Student-Athletes' Choice for Professor of the Year. Dr. Foster is the Director of Inclusive Excellence in the Economics Department and Professor of Economics in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. Other nominees included Dr. Mohanna Mukherjee, a part-time and visiting faculty member for the Sociology Department in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Mary Barron, an associate professor for the Exercise and Nutrition Sciences Department in the Milken Institute of Public Health, Meredith Geisler, a teaching instructor of management for the Sport Management/Tourism Studies Department in the GW School of Business and Dr. Jin Hyung Kim, an assistant professor of international business for the department of international business in the GW School of Business.
