Following the retirement of Dr. Bev Westerman, the George Washington University has appointed Dr. Jennifer Sacheck, Professor and Sanofi Chair of Prevention and Wellness in the Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at SPH, to serve as the school's next Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR). The FAR is a faculty member who has been designated by the institution to serve as a liaison between the school and the athletics department. In this role, Dr. Sacheck serves as a representative of GW in Atlantic 10 Conference and NCAA affairs, ensuring the appropriate balance between academics and sports for student-athletes.
A lifelong enthusiast for physical activity, and still a competitive Master's rower, Dr. Sacheck discovered the sport of rowing in high school and was a member of a crew team that won a national title her senior year. That was followed by a full athletic scholarship to Syracuse University, where she was team captain, named Academic All-American, and graduated with a B.S. in Biology. She competed internationally on selection teams and coached at both at Radcliffe (Harvard University) and the University of Massachusetts during her early graduate school years. Her rowing achievements on Onondoga Lake and nationally earned her enshrinement into the Syracuse Rowing Hall of Fame in 2016 with formal induction in September. She continues to race and has brought home wins in five Head of the Charles Annual Regattas (the largest three-day regatta in the World) over the past decade.
Dr. Sacheck has a MS in Exercise Science and received her PhD in Nutrition Science from Tufts University in 2001. She is a nationally recognized expert and published author in nutrition and physical activity, with a special focus on keeping children and adolescents fit to promote lifelong health. Dr. Sacheck's research has included large trials examining the impact of diet and physical activity on a variety of health outcomes, with a focus on pediatric health disparities, notably with funding from the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the US Department of Agriculture, among others. She has partnered with several non-profit organizations across the U.S. and locally to facilitate real-world impact in schools and communities.
Dr. Sacheck is an elected member of the Faculty Senate, Chairs the Athletics and Recreation Committee, and is an affiliated member of the Global Food Institute at GW. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine where she actively participates on advisory committees on national health policy and youth sports initiatives and was previously appointed to the Intitute of Medicine Committee examining fitness and health outcomes among youth.
