Men’s Soccer Falls vs. ODU, 4-2, in Season Opener

WASHINGTON - The GW men's soccer team opened the season on Thursday afternoon with a 4-2 loss at home to Old Dominion. GW fell behind 3-0 in the first 40 minutes, but scored just before half to cut the deficit to two. GW could then only muster one more conversion in the second half while conceding another to the Monarchs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
7th Minute: ODU's Key White got past a defender on the side of the 18-yard box before sending in a pass to teammate Timothy Einnin who made it 1-0 early with a one-timed finish.
24th Minute: ODU doubled the lead on a fast break as Einnin found White open on the far side of the box, who converted to make it 2-0 Monarchs.
39th Minute: A cross was sent in to Lewis Redding, who fired a shot that was saved by GW goalkeeper Tom Macauley, but the rebound found the head of Noah Madrigal who finished to make it 3-0.
45th Minute: Louis Crofts cut into the deficit for GW with seconds to go in the first half on a shot from well outside the 18-yard box. Crofts navigated past two defenders before striking with his left foot and finding the upper-left corner of the net. Nico Medina assisted on the play.
46th Minute: Just out of the break, White took advantage of a wayward GW pass and centered the ball for Einnin who tapped in his second goal of the match.
65th Minute: GW's Mark Nakamura sent in a cross from near the halfway line and found Joe Liebe open on the other end. Liebe headed the ball off the cross over the ODU goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Crofts, a first-year out of Shrewsbury, England, scored his first career goal and GW's first goal of the season.

GW outshot ODU, 15-9, including a 10-2 shot advantage in the second half.

GW had 13 corner kicks, while ODU had just two.

Three GW field players went the full 90 minutes: Liebe, Medina and Colin Prendergast.

Jaden Dubon and Crofts led GW with three shots on goal apiece, both in their GW debuts.

Two yellow cards were shown to each team: Crofts (36th minute) and Will Turner (47th minute) were booked for GW, while Michael Eberle (53rd minute) and Jett Aktan (73rd minute) were cautioned for ODU.
UP NEXT
The Revolutionaries will look for their first win of 2024 this Sunday when they host Saint Peter's at the GW Soccer Field. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. and the match will air live on ESPN+.
