3/5/2024 1:11:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball hosts its final home game of the season on Senior Night as it welcomes St. Bonaventure to the District for the first time since 2020. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+. The Buff & Blue will honor three seniors - Babatunde Akingbola, James Bishop IV and Antoine Smith Jr. - prior to the contest in a ceremony at approximately 6:45 p.m.
BUCHANAN EARNS FOURTH A-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK AWARD
Darren Buchanan Jr. returned with a flourish last week, collecting his fourth A-10 Rookie of the Week honor after missing three of the prior four games with a groin injury. Buchanan averaged 21.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 2.5 apg while shooting 50% FG and 81.3% FT against UMass and La Salle.
For the season, the redshirt freshman is up to 15.6 ppg and 6.7 rpg, ranking eighth and seventh, respectively, among all players in the A-10. He is also third in the circuit in field goal percentage at 54.8%.
Buchanan's four Rookie of the Week honors match his teammate Garrett Johnson for the most in the league this year. The duo is the first pair of teammates with 4+ A-10 Rookie of the Week awards since Dayton's Malachi Smith and Daron Holmes in 2021-22.
APPROACHING PROGRAM RECORDS
The Buff & Blue have knocked down 255 3-pointers in 28 games this season, already 27 more than last season and the third-most in program history. The all-time record is 276, held by the 2016-17 team in 35 games.
GW has also accrued the fourth-most blocks in a single season with 142. The all-time mark is 163 set during the 2017-18 campaign. Individually, Babatunde Akingbola has accounted for 77 of the 142 blocks and is eight shy of surpassing Yinka Dare's mark of 84 set during the 1993-94 season.
A LOOK AT THE BONNIES
St. Bonaventure has been off for the last week, but enters Wednesday having won its last two games at Massachusetts (75-67) and at home against Loyola Chicago (79-64). The Bonnies have won four of their last five overall and are 7-3 since starting A-10 play at 2-4.
Chad Venning anchors St. Bonaventure's interior with 14.5 ppg and 5.0 rpg, having scored in double figures in all but one A-10 contest. He is fifth in the league in field goal percentage (53.9%) and fifth with 51 blocks. Cincinnati transfer Mika Adams-Woods (12.9 ppg) and Bryant transfer Charles Pride (11.5 ppg) both also contribute double digits for the Bonnies. Noel Brown, who played at GW the last three seasons, is in his first year at St. Bonaventure, averaging 6.0 ppg and 2.1 rpg.
As evidenced by its 9-7 conference record, the Bonnies have had a Jekyll and Hyde personality, averaging 83.0 ppg on 51% FG and 43% 3pt in A-10 wins compared to 62.4 ppg on 38% FG and 30% 3pt in A-10 losses.
