WASHINGTON – Following an outstanding showing at the Fred Hardy Invitational last weekend, the George Washington men's and women's track teams are set to compete in the Raleigh Relays on Thursday and Friday. The event is hosted by NC State and will feature six GW student-athletes across the two days.
Last weekend at the Fred Hardy Invitational, GW set two program records to highlight the outdoor season-opening performance in Richmond. Rachel Horowitz continued her spectacular graduate season with her seventh total school record. She tallied a mark of 24.97 in the 200m dash, earning second place as an individual in the event. In total, Horowitz was part of six records during the 2023-24 indoor season, setting new benchmarks in the 60m, 200m, 300m, 400m and 500m, and being part of the 4x400m relay team that set a new program benchmark at the A-10 Indoor Championships. Along with Horowtiz, Kamryn Holness also set the program-record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:12.22, beating the previous time of 1:12.64 set by Liberty Mason-Sharma set in 2015. The accolade is the first program record set by Hollness in her GW career.
On the men's side, Ryan Fowkes also shined bright with an individual victory in the men's 1500m. Fowkes recorded a time of 3:47.82 to claim gold in the 60-runner field. Also headlining the day for the Buff & Blue were nine runners who earned PRs. Those runners included Janae Russell (13.08 – 100m), Kayla DeSousa (1:02.57 – 400m), Colin Funk (1:55.37 – 800m), Michael Bohlke (1:58.56 – 800m), Sarah Mitchell (2:17.05 – 800m), Rita Mazumder (2:18.50 – 800m), Kevin Conlon (3:56.77 – 1500m), Austin Brotemarkle (3:59.23 – 1500m), Lucas Brown (4:04.41 – 1500m) and Ashley Robinson (5:11.66 – 1500m).
This weekend at the Raleigh Relays, GW will send six student-athletes to compete in three different events. On Thursday, the GW men will compete in the 1500m and the 5K races. Patrick Castellano and Bohlke will race in the 1500m at 4:40 p.m., while Jacob Heredia and Fowkes will compete in the 5K race at approximately 6:33 p.m. On Friday, the GW women will also compete in the 5K. Una Boylan and Mitchell will rep the Buff & Blue in the race which is slated for a 6:25 p.m. start time. GW assistant coach Sam Nadel will also compete on Friday, taking part in the women's 1500m race at 4:20 p.m. as an individual.
