Athlete-Alumni and Partners Connect with GW Student-Athletes
GW Athletics recently hosted its 6th Annual Alumni-Athlete Networking Forum and 2nd Annual Black Student-Athlete Alliance (BSAA) Networking Event inside the Charles E. Smith Center.
Led by BSAA President, Caia Loving (sophomore, women's basketball), current student-athletes welcomed Black former student-athletes ranging from multiple sports. Alumni and current student-athletes engaged in a variety of activities and discussions to help cultivate their network while at GW and how to prepare for their future careers.
"The BSAA Networking event was very successful and super engaging," said Loving. "The atmosphere was amazing, allowing beneficial conversations in a networking environment. This event established a great sense of community and connections as Black student-athletes."
More than 115 current student-athletes attended the networking forum and had the opportunity to listen to and network with professional leaders in various industries. The 30 professionals and panelists in attendance were former GW students and student-athletes representing men's and women's basketball, women's soccer, men's cross country, men's rowing, men's and women's swimming and diving, gymnastics, lacrosse, baseball and softball, volleyball and women's tennis.
"This is the highest turnout for both current student-athletes and alumni that we've had for this event," noted James Hellekjaer, Assistant Athletic Director for Educational Support Services. "We are excited to welcome so many of our alumni back to campus to engage with our current student-athletes and staff. Experiences like this are the building blocks for our current student-athletes' professional networks and a great opportunity to develop their skills."
The annual forum event started with a keynote address from Marc Broderick (BA '93), Managing Director and Private Client Advisor, Bank of America Private Bank. Marc was a four-year letter winner on the GW men's swimming & diving team. Broderick shared insight on his transition from student-athlete to his career. He emphasized the importance of student-athletes "telling their story" about transferable skills and experiences from athletics with potential employers, going beyond just a mention on their resume.
Student-athletes were provided with detailed descriptions of the attending alumni, sample questions for networking, and a pre-event workshop in preparation for the evening. A networking session open to all student-athletes followed the keynote in a roundtable discussion format between current student-athletes and alumni.
Companies and individuals who are interested in being a part of future GW Athletics' career services initiatives and mentorship programs are invited to contact Lisa Dunn at 202-994-8355 or lisazdunn@gwu.edu.
