WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team concludes the 2024 regular season on Saturday with a matinee contest against Loyola Chicago at 2:00 p.m. The contest also marks Senior Day for the Revolutionaries, with eight senior and graduate students set to be honored pregame. The matchup will be carried live on Monumental Sports Network and ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
GW picked up a 45-40 victory over Davidson on Saturday night, capitalizing on stellar defense and clutch shot-making down the stretch. GW only allowed nine points in the fourth quarter, all of which came prior to the 4:55 mark in the stanza. GW didn't allow a single point past that mark in the fourth quarter, the longest stretch the Revolutionaries have held an opponent scoreless to end a game this season. GW also benefited from clutch shots to seal the victory. After Nya Robertson knocked down a turnaround 3-pointer to put the Buff & Blue within one, Asjah Inniss tallied the go-ahead bucket with a running floater to give GW a 41-40 lead. Robertson would once again show up in the clutch, draining a fadeaway jumper in the lane to give the GW Revs a 43-40 lead and help seal the victory.
Robertson led the way with 21 points and three rebounds, while Nya Lok finished the game with nine points and six boards. All nine of Lok's points came via the deep ball, hitting all three triples in the second quarter. Mayowa Taiwo continued her phenomenal stretch of rebounding, pulling down a game-high 14 boards, while Inniss finished the game with five points. Essence Brown and Kamari Sims both added four points for the Revolutionaries as well.
HOT PLAY DOWN THE STRETCH
GW enters Saturday's contest winners in three of its past four and four of its last seven contests. The Revolutionaries have wins over St. Bonaventure, La Salle, UMass and Davidson in that stretch, four of the team's five conference wins this season. GW is outscoring its opponents 434-360 in those games, winning on average by 10.6 points per game. GW looks to carry this positive momentum into the Atlantic 10 Championship, which begins on March 6 in Henrico, VA.
SCOUTING THE RAMBLERS
Loyola Chicago enters the season-finale matchup an even 14-14 on the year and 8-9 in the Atlantic 10. The Ramblers were picked to finish 15th in the A-10 Preseason Poll, and have exceeded all expectations with a solid 2023-24 campaign. Loyola Chicago is led by head coach Allison Guth who's in her second season at the helm of the program. Guth holds a 20-38 record with Loyola Chicago and a 119-112 overall record as a head coach after spending six seasons as the leader of Yale's women's basketball program. Guth finished with a 99-74 record with Yale before leaving to join Loyola Chicago prior to the 2022-23 season. Loyola Chicago, the newest member of the Atlantic 10, has only faced GW two times in the program's history. Both matchups came during the 2022-23 season with GW coming away victorious in both contests. GW won the first meeting on Jan. 25, 75-61, and tallied a second victory on Feb. 18, by a final score of 61-50.
On the court, the Ramblers are led by Sam Galanopoulos who averages 13.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Galanopoulos shoots the ball at a team-high 48.0% from the floor and also leads the team in assists per game at 4.1 per contest, which also ranks fourth in the A-10. Alyssa Fisher averages 1.3 points per game for the Ramblers, while Sitori Tanin puts in 10.5 points and grabs a team-high 6.3 rebounds per game. Tanin also ranks fourth in the conference in blocks, averaging 1.5 a night.
