DADE CITY, Fla. - GW men's golf opened up its spring campaign with a trio of matches at the MAC/A-10 Match Play at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club. The Buff & Blue knocked off Dayton in the opening match before falling to Ball State and Richmond to place fourth.
GW opened the tournament as the No. 4 seed and topped No. 5 Dayton, 3-1-2. Jed Dy dominated his match, winning 6&5, while Manuel Barbachano (3&1) and Rodrigo Barahona (1 Up) each won their matches to provide the victory.
The semifinals featured GW going up against the top seed and eventual champion Ball State. Despite the Buff & Blue combining to shoot 3-under in the afternoon session, the Revolutionaries fell, 2-0-4. Dy (3&2) and Barbachano (4&2) each followed up their earlier wins with a second round of triumphs. The duo combined for nine birdies in their two matches.
Tuesday saw GW take on No. 2 seed Richmond in the third-place match, falling 2-0-4. Barbachano made it a perfect week with a 3&2 victory while Leo Xu earned his first triumph of the week with a 2&1 win.
The Buff & Blue will now take nearly a month off from competition before the spring season kicks into high gear with the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate on March 4-5.
