FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Washington women's basketball team fell in a tightly contested A-10 battle to nearby rival George Mason on Saturday afternoon. After GW trailed for the entire first half, the Revolutionaries mounted a third-quarter comeback that saw them take multiple leads late in the game. Despite GW's late run, the Patriots escaped with a 60-57 win inside EagleBank Arena.
On the day where Mayowa Taiwo tied GW's program record for most career games played with 130, she also moved up another all-time leaderboard, passing GW Athletics Hall of Famer Jonquel Jones for fourth on the program's all-time rebounding list. Taiwo pulled down a season-high tying 15 rebounds on the day to go along with 14 points in her monster double-double effort. Taiwo's 11th carom of the day leaped Jones on the all-time ranks, and inched her closer to Tajama Abraham, who sits in third with 970. After today's effort, Taiwo now has 966 career rebounds, meaning she needs just five more to crack GW's top-three.
The Revolutionaries' stellar second half was aided by a 13-5 run that drew GW within one point with 5:41 left in the third quarter. GW would eventually take its first lead of the game with 2:04 left in the quarter off a free throw from Nya Lok. Lok would finish with 10 points, one of three Revolutionaries to score in double figures, and also added six rebounds.
After leading by one entering the fourth quarter, GW was ultimately outscored 15-11 in the frame. Down three in the closing seconds, GW was unable to connect on a long distance 3-pointer to knot the score. Neither team led by more than three points in the final frame, giving a fast-paced back and forth environment for all 1,891 fans in attendance.
Along with Taiwo and Lok, Nya Robertson got into double figures for the Buff & Blue with 11 points. Nine of Robertson's points came via the deep ball and she also added three boards. Asjah Inniss registered eight points and three rebounds for the GW Revs, while Essence Brown added six points and eight rebounds off the bench. First-year guard Kamari Sims provided valuable minutes off GW's bench, contributing six points on the afternoon.
The Buff & Blue return to action on Wednesday at Duquesne. Tip-off is slated for 11:00 a.m., with live coverage carried on ESPN+.
