WASHINGTON - Per Head Coach Caroline's McCombs' credo - "our defense will tell us if we won, our offense will tell us by how much" - both made convincing statements Wednesday night at the Smith Center against La Salle. The GW D held the visiting Explorers under 50 points, while a 71-point outburst on the other end signified a GW Revs' win in a rout.
Nya Robertson was the offensive star of the game for the home club, pouring in 25 points while consistently trying to push the pace against the more plodding style of the Explorers. The sophomore standout canned four triples, the most thrilling being a halfcourt bomb as the first half clock ticked to zero, sending George Washington into intermission up 28-16.
While La Salle answered valiantly and cut the deficit to 34-30, GW wouldn't be denied in its pink uniforms in the annual Play4Kay game. GDUB punched back with its lead narrowed and surged on a 14-2 to end the third quarter to take a 16-point edge into the final frame. The margin hit 25 at its largest, allowing GW to empty its bench by game's end.
Behind Robertson's game-high 25, Nya Lok and Essence Brown also hit double figures with 11 apiece, while first-year Kamari Sims tossed in eight. In another positive sign for GW, grad student Mayowa Taiwo was once again a monster on the glass, with yet another double-digit rebounding performance in her game-high 10-carom night. She was also an active facilitator, dishing four assists to pace all players in helpers.
GW's defense set the tone for the game early, allowing just one made field goal in the opening quarter. As the hosts led 9-5 after ten minutes, it was clear that it would be a long night for the visitors. La Salle's shooting improved marginally, but the .316 effort (18-of-57) wasn't nearly enough to top GW's .403 mark, a number that included a solid 9-of-26 (.346) performance from three-point range.
Up next GW gets another crack at a team it's looking up to in the standings, with George Mason on the docket Saturday. The short trip to Fairfax, Va. will have the Revolutionaries looking to avenge an earlier loss to the Patriots this season, with tip-time coming at EagleBank Arena at 3 p.m. Saturday, live on ESPN+.
