WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's basketball team is set to host La Salle on Wednesday night inside the Smith Center for the program's annual Play4Kay game. Live coverage of the contest will be available through ESPN+ with tip-off slated for 6 p.m.
PLAY4KAY GAME
In celebration of legendary women's college basketball coach Kay Yow, the Play4Kay movement is an opportunity to celebrate those whose lives have been impacted by cancer. Play4Kay games not only give schools the opportunity to honor cancer survivors, but also raise money and awareness around funds that help fight cancer in women. In celebration of this great cause, GW will debut new pink jerseys for Wednesday's contest and encourage all fans in attendance to wear pink as well. The game will also feature various themed videos and in-arena reads that give those in attendance the opportunity to learn more and donate to the Play4Kay movement.
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS
La Salle arrives in the DMV after suffering a 57-52 loss at Duquesne last Saturday. The Explorers boast a 7-16 overall record and hold a 4-8 mark in Atlantic 10 play. La Salle is led by sixth-year head coach Mountain MacGillivray, who holds a 71-98 overall record at the helm of the program. MacGillivray and the Explorers are coming off two-straight winning seasons in 2021-22 and 2022-23, his first two as a collegiate head coach. Despite the recent success, La Salle has struggled to find consistent success this season, losing eight-straight games from late November to early January. MacGillivray is 4-2 against GW in his six seasons including a win in the most recent meeting on Jan. 14, 2023, defeating the Buff & Blue 74-65.
This season, the Explorers have seen double-figure offensive production from three players. Leading the way are Makayla Miller and Nicole Melious who both average 10.2 points per game. Miller boasts a field-goal percentage of 42.4% which ranks second on the team, while Melious is second on the team in assists at 3.1 a night. Along with Miller and Melious, Aryss Macktoon also averages double-figures at 10.8 points per night but has not appeared in a game since Nov. 15. Jolene Armedariz leads the Explorers in rebounding at 6.0 a game, while Molly Masciantonio is tops in assists at 3.3 per contest.
JONQUEL'S BIG WEEKEND
Last weekend, GW women's basketball alum and 2021 WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones was inducted into the GW Athletics Hall of Fame. Joining Jonquel in her induction was the 1979 Atlantic 10 Championship team, Andrea Bolognesi (Men's Swimming & Diving), Carl Elliott (Men's Basketball), Arnar Johannsson (Men's Soccer), Autumn Taylor (Softball) and Darden Wilee (Gymnastics).
Jones was drafted sixth overall in the first round of the WNBA draft in 2016 as GW's first-ever first-round selection after an historic career in the Buff and Blue. She ranks third all-time at George Washington in career rebounds, fourth in scoring average (15.4), fifth in blocked shots and 23rd in points in just 76 games from 2013-16 after transferring from Clemson. She is one of only three players in the storied tradition of women's basketball at GW with 1,000+ points, 800+ rebounds and 100+ blocks in a career. After leading the nation as a senior in rebounding and finishing 13th in the NCAA with 18 double-doubles, Jones earned her second career WBCA All-American nod as well as her second straight Associated Press All-American recognition. She capped her junior season as the A-10's Player and Defensive Player of the Year as just the fourth player in conference history to earn both accolades in the same season. Jones currently plays for the WNBA's New York Liberty.
