Men's Basketball Falls to American in Overtime, 81-71

WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball made the crosstown trek on Wednesday night expecting a battle against local rival American and the game lived up to all the hype. In the end, it was a prayer of a 3-pointer from the Eagles that sent the game to overtime where the hosts dominated en route to an 81-71.
GW held a 60-57 lead in the waning seconds when Jacoi Hutchinson poked the ball away from AU guard Colin Smalls, only to see Smalls regain the ball near mid-court and launch a miraculous contested triple try that hit nothing but net to tie the game with 1.2 seconds remaining.
Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Matt Rogers then took over in the the extra session, scoring the first eight points as AU never trailed to pull away for the win.
The Buff & Blue were in position to win in regulation thanks to another strong second half comeback. GW trailed by as many as 13 in the second half but roared back behind the D.C. tandem of Darren Buchanan Jr. and Jacoi Hutchinson.
The duo scored 14 points in a row at one point to help whittle the deficit down and eventually push GW in front, 51-50, on a driving layup from Hutchinson with 5:45 to go. Neither team led by more than a possession the remainder of regulation.
Buchanan was the catalyst offensively, attacking with regularity to create scoring opportunities, ultimately finishing with 20 of his season-high 24 points after halftime. The unfortunate story came from the free throw line, though, as Buchanan finished an uncharacteristic 10-of-21 at the stripe, including splitting a trip with GW up three and 14.5 seconds remaining in regulation.
Hutchinson reset his career-high for the third time already this campaign, finishing with 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.
GW pounded the paint to the tune of a 52-18 advantage, but couldn't find its shot from deep until the game's final minutes, before finishing 2-of-13 beyond the arc on the night. AU, meanwhile, hit 13-of-32 3-point attempts including two from Rogers in OT.
Smalls led all scorers for American, posting 26 points on the back of 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Rogers added 18 points and six rebounds.
GW will return to action on Saturday when it hits the road yet again for a 4 p.m. matchup at Old Dominion. Live coverage will be available on ESPN+.
