12/22/2024 2:25:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON - Wrapping up the semester and non-conference play Sunday against Division II UVA Wise, George Washington men's basketball did what it needed to do to enjoy a happy holiday season.
While it took a good portion of the first half to awake from a winter's nap, the Revolutionaries responded from a 20-15 deficit with 7:46 to play in the first with a 45-20 run over the next 16 minutes of play to take a 65-40 lead at the under-12 timeout of the second half.
Rafael Castro had his way with the opposition, as the Big East transfer showed UVA Wise top-level athleticism. His 14-point, 14-rebound double-double in 24 minutes left little to doubt in the closing minutes as the GW bench got to play significant time to close out the game in valuable court action that could pay dividends in Atlantic 10 play.
In all GW had nine players play at least 10 minutes, and the Revolutionaries' reserves outscored the Cavaliers' bench, 59-10.
Dayan Nessah led the bench unit with an efficient 19-point outing, shooting 8-of-9 shooting from the floor in his 16 minutes of play.
Walk-on Amir Arrington put a bow on top of the win with a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to put his team over the 100-point mark in regulation for the first time since Feb. 21, 2018.
George Washington now starts anew with conference play on tap. A-10 action tips off for the GW Revs on New Year's Eve at Richmond at 4pm on Monumental Sports Network and ESPN+.
